How to Plan The Perfect Proposal

It’s that time of year. Subtle trips to the jewelry store to “try on rings”, and your favorite rom-com Hallmark movies playing on repeat. Tis’ the season for proposals and I am here to make sure that anybody and everybody who is planning to get engaged knows how to plan the perfect proposal.

Now I know what you’re probably thinking… “how hard can it be?”. The answer is? Very. Especially if you’re wanting that *picture-perfect* fairytale-like moment. Proposals can take a lot of time, effort, brainstorming, and planning. Lucky for you though, I’ve condensed all of my experience with helping plan proposals to the absolute necessities.

How to plan the perfect proposal

Now that you’ve gotten your boo the perfect ring for your proposal, it’s time to plan. These are the steps that you’re going to need to take in order to plan the perfect proposal and get that wow factor moment.

1. HIRE A PHOTOGRAPHER TO CAPTURE THE MOMENT

Am I biased if I say that one of the most important aspects of knowing how to plan the perfect proposal is making sure you hire a photographer to capture the moment? Maybe. However, it’s 100% true! Having a photographer to document this life-changing moment is crucial to add to that wow factor that everyone wants on the day they get engaged.

After getting engaged, you’re going to have an influx of questions. How did it happen? Were you surprised? Where did they do it? Everything that anyone is ever going to want to know about this special moment. Oftentimes though, you can get so lost in the sauce that you even forget what happened. I mean it’s happened more than once before and is a pretty common reaction for couples. I suggest before doing any major splurges for your proposal (besides the ring of course), to invest in your photographer. You will not be disappointed.

2. CONSIDER WHAT FITS YOU TWO BEST

Next, you want to figure out the where. That’s kind of a big deal if you ask me! When deciding on the location for your proposal, consider what fits both of you and what you both enjoy. Do you want to propose in public? What about somewhere more private? Or choose a location that means something to your love story? These are some of the questions that can and should run through your mind when knowing how to plan the perfect proposal. When it comes to decided the where I encourage you to not only think about what you would want, but what your partner would want. If public places and being the center of attention are not their thing, then I would not recommend bringing them to a crowded place and dropping down to one knee. Step number two in knowing how to plan the perfect proposal? Know your audience.

3. SET THE SCENE

Okay so you’ve got the ring, the photographer and the location picked out… now what? You want to make sure that you are setting the scene for your proposal! Before deciding to pop the question, you need to decide how do you want the scene to look. Are you trying to go over the top with balloons, candles and a huge “marry me” sign? Or are you looking for something more subtle and approachable for your partner? The sky is honestly the limit! However again, I would recommend looking into what your partner would want and if it fits their personalities and what they would want in a proposal.

4. HOW TO POP THE QUESTION

When it comes to actually popping the question, there are a few different ways you can go about it. With one option, you can book your proposal with a photographer and have the photographer direct the moment. This is helpful if you’re needing a bit more guidance and support when it comes to asking that important question. Remember that if you’re looking to have a a surprise moment with your partner, you’re going to need to be very sneaky. You can disguise this proposal as an anniversary session or just a random couples shoot that you’re gifting your partner. Something so that your plan isn’t totally given away.

The second option is having your photographer hidden away to capture the surprise as it happens. If you ever hear or see your photographer talk about hiding behind a tree, putting on a disguise or being inside a bush it’s 99.9% of the time for a proposal. This option is going to be best for if you don’t need that much guidance but are still needing a bit of help on how to pop the question.

Either way, we’ll work together to determine the best course of action for your specific proposal. We’ll be able to chat with plenty of time before the proposal to come up with a plan, strategize and make sure this is one succesful proposal story.

5. DO YOU HAVE AN AUDIENCE?

This ties into what location you choose to pop the question at, but think about who is around during the big moment. Do you want it to just be you and your photographer? Or are you someone who is wanting family and friends around to join in on the moment? This is the time to really take into account what your partner wants. Again, if your partner is not the center of attention type, then having a large crowd of friends and family around when you pop the question might not be the best way. Don’t always think about what is going to be the most epic and “photo worthy”, instead of think about what is going to be the most memorable for you two.

6.) After the proposal

Everyone gets so caught up with the actual proposal itself, that they seem to neglect one thing. The proposal aftermath aka, what happens next?! Your engagement does not just have to stop at the proposal. In fact, I encourage it not to and to fully take advantage of this moment!

Use this moment to book a nice dinner reservation, have some friends and family gather for a surprise engagement party, or get your favorite take-out and cuddle up and watch a movie at home. Don’t let the day fizzle out after the infamous “will you marry me?”. Soak up this moment and enjoy every second of it.

How To Plan The Perfect Proposal

So whether you’re looking to go all out for your proposal or something a bit more casual, the most important thing is that it feels right to you and your partner. Knowing how to plan the perfect proposal is only half the battle. Now, you have to gear up, get ready, drop to one knee, and actually do it! For all you future fiancés out there – congratulations!
